With the recent growth of nuclear material around the world including enrichment in Iran, proliferation by China, posturing by the U.S. and North Korea, and the sale of nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, nuclear material, despite many nonproliferation actions and treaties, continues to spread globally. A question must be asked about what happens if any of this nuclear material slips through the cracks and into the hands of bad actors, and a question persists about has this happened before. The European Union has been safeguarding itself from nuclear and radioactive terrorism for decades, but how is this material controlled and accounted for? The webinar will provide an overview of nuclear material and how it could be used by bad actors. What are nuclear black markets? How does the European Union track and control nuclear material? Is it enough? What can be done better?
