The Eastern Mediterranean has always been one of the main areas of strife between regional and great powers. Although the number of actors and the subject of the competition have been changing through history, the region still remains a geopolitical arena. In recent years, the discovery of the new natural gas fields and the consequences of the “Arab Spring” have significantly increased the number of participants and raised the stakes. Even in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world hard, the possibility of a region-wide armed conflict appeared on the horizon.
The proposed two-panel conference organised by the Knowledge Centre seeks to answer the questions: How the struggle for resources has intensified during the past years? What impact did the geopolitical rivalry have on alliance building or dissolution, and what can we expect in the following years?
Watch our speakers of Panel I analysing the impact that the geopolitical rivalry have on the alliance system, the external and internal challenges that the studied countries (focusing especially on Libya, Egypt, and Israel) are facing, and potential outcomes that we can expect in the following years.
