The Eastern Mediterranean has always been one of the main areas of strife between regional and great powers. Although the number of actors and the subject of the competition have been changing through history, the region still remains a geopolitical arena. In recent years, the discovery of the new natural gas fields and the consequences of the “Arab Spring” have significantly increased the number of participants and raised the stakes. Even in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world hard, the possibility of a region-wide armed conflict appeared on the horizon.
The proposed two-panel conference organised by the Knowledge Centre seeks to answer the questions: How the struggle for resources has intensified during the past years? What impact did the geopolitical rivalry have on alliance building or dissolution, and what can we expect in the following years?
