Saudi Arabia managed to avoid the political turmoil that swept across the region since 2011. At the same time, it is safe to assume that the dynamics of these popular protests encouraged a particular segment of the Saudi society to raise their concerns. Clearly, the ambivalent treatment of women - at least measured by western standards - poses a great political challenge for the Kingdom. Under these circumstances, the article asks the question of how metro construction in Riyadh could contribute to women’s empowerment and equality.
