The COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly become a global public health crisis, with powerful security ramifications. NATO countries have been disproportionately impacted by the outbreak; five out of ten countries with the highest number of fatalities (as of late June 2020) were NATO allies. As of August 2020, the global death toll overpassed 800,000, with an estimated 23.8 million infections. The increased stress on public health systems has pushed many of them to maximum capacity.
